Once a tree is down, the stump left behind can be more of a problem than the tree itself. It takes up space, can be a trip hazard, and depending on the species, can send up shoots for years from the root system if it is not dealt with properly. Stump grinding
Stump grinding is the most common approach and our usual recommendation. A mechanical grinder works the stump down below ground level – typically 150mm to 300mm depending on what the area will be used for. The arisings are a mix of wood chip and soil that can be used as mulch or removed. The ground settles over a season and the area becomes usable for lawn, planting, or hard landscaping.
One point worth knowing: a number of tree species regenerate from the root system even after the stump is removed. Holly is a common example in this area. If the species is one of these, we will advise chemical treatment of the roots at the same time as grinding to prevent regrowth.
Removal with a digger
On smaller stumps with enough access, mechanical removal with a mini digger takes the stump and root ball out in one operation. This is the right approach where the ground is being prepared for a building extension, a hard standing, or anything that needs the root system fully clear. We assess access carefully – most Chester and Cheshire gardens can take a mini digger through a standard gate, and we discuss this at the quoting stage.
Chemical stump treatment
Where access makes grinding or mechanical removal impractical, or where the customer prefers a less disruptive approach, we use eco-plugs. These are inserted into the stump and kill the root system over approximately one growing season. Once the root system is dead the stump can be removed without risk of further regrowth. This is a slower method but causes minimal ground disturbance and is suitable for stumps in awkward locations.

The right method depends on the species of tree, the size of the stump, what access is available, and what you plan to do with the area afterwards. We assess all of this during a free site visit and give a clear recommendation before any work is booked.

A straightforward domestic stump in a garden with good access is typically dealt with as part of the same visit as a tree removal, or as a standalone job. We provide a fixed written quote after the site visit – no surprises on the day.

Frequently asked questions
How long does stump grinding take?
A standard domestic stump takes between 30 minutes and 2 hours depending on size. Larger stumps or multiple stumps take longer – we give a realistic time estimate at the site visit.
Will the stump grow back after grinding?
For most species, no. Where the species is known to regenerate from the root system, we advise chemical treatment at the same time and will tell you this clearly at the quoting stage.
Can you grind stumps in confined spaces?
Yes. We carry stump grinders in various sizes including compact machines that fit through standard garden gates. Most Chester and Cheshire gardens are accessible.
Do you remove the arisings?
The wood chip from grinding can be left as mulch or we can remove it – your preference. We discuss this at the site visit.
