Tree Felling in Chester
Tree felling is the part of tree surgery that most landowners in Chester only call about once or twice in the life of a property. It is also the part that has the most planning, safety and access work behind the scenes. The two methods we use are simple to describe but the work that sits behind each is what decides whether the job goes cleanly or causes problems.
When tree felling is the right call
Trees reach the end of their useful life for a number of reasons. Decline through disease, with ash dieback the most visible across Cheshire in recent years, wind or storm damage that has compromised the structure, root or trunk decay, a tree that has been planted too close to a building, or a tree that has simply outgrown the position it occupies. In some cases the answer is a careful reduction or ongoing management; in others, felling is the only sensible option. We give a plain view on which one applies after a site visit.

Emergency Tree Work
Following a discussion and visual inspection of the tree, a plan is made to determine the best course of action and the most efficient and safe way to carry out the proposed work. Depending on the tree species, size, location and health, there are two methods we use.
The first involves cutting down a tree at the base using a series of accurate cuts and techniques to ensure controlled felling. This needs a clear drop zone, careful hinge and back cuts to direct the fall, and rope work to assist where the natural lean would otherwise drop the tree the wrong way.
The second method is sectional dismantling. This involves climbing the tree and removing small sections from the top down, lowering them on ropes to the ground. It is the right approach for confined gardens, properties close to buildings, or any site where a controlled drop is not possible.
How we plan a felling job
Every site is different. Access, ground conditions, neighbouring buildings, overhead lines, underground services, and the fall direction all feed into the plan we put together before any saw work begins. We mark out drop zones, stage chippers and removal vehicles for the brash, and brief everyone on the job so the work is methodical from start to finish. Stump grinding and removal we cover in the same visit where the access allows.

Tree Preservation Orders
Before any felling work on a tree of significant size we check the TPO and conservation area status with Cheshire West and Chester Council, or the relevant Welsh authority for sites in Flintshire and Wrexham. Felling a protected tree without consent is a criminal offence with substantial fines on conviction, and we will not take that risk on an owner’s behalf. Where consent is needed we prepare and submit the application paperwork, included in the price for the work.
