Ornamental bamboo is easy to plant and hard to undo. Left unmanaged it spreads through underground rhizomes that can travel several metres from the original clump, coming up through lawns, patios and even the edge of a neighbouring garden. Running bamboo species are the main culprit — clumping varieties are far better behaved, but by the time we’re called out most owners aren’t sure which one they have, which is the first thing we check.
Why it needs a proper job, not a quick chop
Cutting bamboo back to the ground does nothing to the root system underneath, and canes that are simply strimmed or sawn off tend to come back thicker the following season. Removing it properly means excavating the rhizome mass, not just the visible canes.
How we remove it
We dig out the rhizome network by hand and machine depending on the area involved, checking the full spread before starting rather than assuming it stops at the visible canes. Where bamboo is being kept in a reduced area rather than removed entirely, we install a root barrier to stop it spreading again — a physical membrane sunk to the right depth around the retained clump. All root material and canes are removed from site and disposed of properly; we are a fully licensed and registered carrier of waste with the Environment Agency.
