Cross the Old Dee Bridge from the city and you are in Handbridge within seconds, but the place itself feels distinctly its own. The Roman shrine to Minerva sits in Edgar’s Field a short walk from the river, the footpaths through The Meadows give you that rare thing of open green space ten minutes from a cathedral, and the property mix runs from Victorian terraces on Eaton Road out to the larger detached homes towards Eccleston Avenue. Trees here have grown up with that history.
Tree surgery for Handbridge gardens
For tree surgery in Handbridge, the mix of property types shapes what gets asked for. Older terraces with mature ash, sycamore or cherry overlooking the rear gardens often need crown reduction to keep the canopy in proportion with what is a modest plot, and crown thinning to let some light back through to lawns that have gradually disappeared under shade. Larger properties on the leafier roads regularly call for deadwooding on mature oaks and beeches, where high branches eventually start to die back from the ends in.
Tree removal and felling work in Handbridge often comes with the river in the background. We are used to working on properties where access is from a single side gate and the only sensible way to lower sections is by rope into a tight space. Stump grinding and removal follows on, and we have grinders sized for narrow access. The ground here can also be wet closer to the Dee, and we plan that into the timing for any heavier work.
Hedges, fencing and landscaping
Hedge trimming and management makes up a good slice of regular work. Beech, yew and laurel are common boundary plants in this part of Chester and they reward an annual cut more than the every-three-years approach. We are happy to take on individual jobs or work to a maintenance contract that covers hedges, grass cutting and seasonal garden tidies.
Landscaping in Handbridge varies by street. On the older terraces we install replacement fencing, repair brick boundary walls, and clear back ivy that has worked its way into mortar. On the larger properties we lay resin bound driveways, design and build ponds, and undertake hard landscaping projects from raised beds to full garden remodels. Vegetation clearance for plots that have been let go is regular work too, and we cart away the arisings rather than leaving anyone with a heap.
TPOs, knotweed and tree surveys
Parts of Handbridge fall within or adjacent to conservation areas, and a number of the larger trees on private plots are protected. Before any major tree work we check the current status with Cheshire West and Chester Council and submit the application paperwork on the owner’s behalf where consent is needed. A bit of paperwork at the start saves a great deal of trouble later.
Japanese knotweed is worth a mention for Handbridge given the river. Riverside plots and old garden boundaries sometimes have it, and it does not get better on its own. We offer assessment and an ongoing management plan, and we can advise on whether a property sale or mortgage is likely to need a formal treatment record.
Tree surveys are something we do regularly here. Surveys for owners thinking of selling, for buyers wanting clarity on what they are taking on, and for anyone with a large tree near a building. The reports are written in plain English with photographs and clear recommendations.
Credentials
We are ARB Approved Contractors, City and Guilds qualified, and fully insured. The ARB Approved Contractor status is independently audited, so when you commission us you are commissioning a business that has been checked against the industry standard for tree work, not just one that has called itself competent.
